The method can be off by a few points. Its real value is the trend: measure the same way, at the same place, every month.
Are you a coach?
A test gives a number. Moveat keeps it next to the weight, the measurements and the photos your clients send every week, so you see where each one is going. Free for 2 clients.
How the calculation works
The US Navy method
It was published by Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984. It estimates body density from circumferences and height, then converts it into a fat percentage.
Where to measure
Neck: just below the larynx. Waist: at the navel for a man, at the narrowest point for a woman. Hips: at the widest point. Tape flat, not tight.
Common questions
Is it as accurate as a scan?
No. A scan measures, this method estimates. It is still more useful than a bathroom scale that claims to measure fat, because it reacts to real changes in waist size.
Why does a woman need a hip measurement?
Because fat is not stored in the same places. The formula for women adds the hips to the waist to take that into account.
How do I use it with a client?
Measure once a month, in the same conditions. Look at the direction of the number, not at its exact value. That is also what Moveat does with the measurements of a check-in.
