The 20 metre shuttle run, also called the beep test or Léger test. Enter the last level completed and get its speed and the estimated VO2 max.

Estimated VO2 max : 47.6 ml/kg/min

This is an example. Enter your own numbers to see your result.

Speed at that level
12.5 km/h

This uses the version of the test that starts at 8.5 km/h and adds 0.5 km/h per level. Other versions exist: check which one your audio track uses.

How the calculation works

The speed of a level

The test starts at 8.5 km/h at level 1 and adds 0.5 km/h at each level. The speed is 8 plus 0.5 times the level.

The Léger formula

For an adult, VO2 max equals 6 times the speed of the last level, minus 27.4. It comes from the equation published by Léger and colleagues in 1988, with age set to 18 as its authors prescribe for adults.

Common questions

What counts as the last level?

The last level fully completed. If the client stops halfway through a level, enter the previous one plus a half.

Why use it instead of the Cooper test?

It needs only 20 metres and it sets the pace for you, so it works indoors and with a group. The turns make it harder for tall or heavy people.

Is the result the same as a lab test?

No. It is an estimate from a field test. Use it to follow one person over time, not to compare with a lab value.
